Above is this weeks free desktop. Back once again to a park located very close to Moab, UT, Canyonlands National Park. The Colorado River and Green River helped form this wonderful park, while at the same time, also dividing Canyonlands into three separate sections (the National Park Service says four sections, but they include the rivers as one (: ) - the Island in the Sky, The Maze and The Needles. The first section, Island in the Sky, has been featured here many, many times, while the second, The Maze has never been as I've not visited this section (very remote, can only be reached with 4x4). The third section, The Needles, has been is shown here a time or two and gets the honor again this week. This section has a very intriguing landscape that features rock spires, arches, canyons, grabens, and potholes with the main formations being banded rock pinnacles - the needles. The shot here is of one of the many narrow canyons found by The Big Spring Canyon Overlook. Taken in May 2003, this gives you a reasonable idea of "the lay of the land" with a few spires clearly visible. With the numerous trails available (both simple and backcountry), many 4x4 only roads, and the untamed rivers, Canyonlands NP can offer any level of adventure you desire - from wild to very mild. To be sure, no matter what level you seek, a truely rewarding visit is always possible here.
